  3. The primary scientific objectives of the UVCS instrument are: 
  4. ∑  To investigate the physical processes for accelerating the solar 
  5.    wind,
  6. ∑  To investigate the physical processes for heating the extended
  7.    coronal plasma,
  8. ∑  To locate and characterize coronal sources of the solar wind,
  9. ∑  To investigate coronal phenomena that establish the plasma 
  10.    properties of the solar wind,
  11. ∑  To determine the plasma properties of coronal mass ejections
  12.    (CMEs) near the Sun, and
  13. ∑  To investigate physical processes for determining the 
  14.    characteristics of CMEs.
  15.  
  16. An understanding of the physical processes that control solar wind acceleration contributes to our understanding of 
  17. mass loss in other stars.
  18.
